A beginner’s guide to technical SEO

In order to provide you with a brief summary of what technical SEO is, we first have to define what SEO means. As you can see on Wikipedia’s page about the subject, it stands for “Search Engine Optimization” and is a method that a website marketing agency uses in order to move a website higher up in search engine results. Take for example the sport of tennis. You’ve no doubt heard commentators speak of how a top player might be described as “he/she is now ranked number one in the world”.

The same thought process can be applied to websites. If a site is ranked number one for a particular search term e.g. “SEO agency London“, the website that is listed first in the non-paid results that are displayed on the page, then we can say that the company ranks number one for that term. The website in question will no doubt have been optimized well to achieve this highly coveted position in search engine results.

The technical aspects

In general, well-optimized websites will have phrases and terms on their pages that match the words that a person types into the search engine (e.g. Google, Bing etc.). But, it’s not only about the page’s written content; there are other more technical aspects at work too. For example, how quickly a site loads on the page is an important factor as well. Google favours websites that load quickly because Google knows that this is what the user wants.

In fact, in a blog on the Yoast website, it’s top of the list of their eight aspects of technical SEO. The post goes on to list other factors such as how well the site is structured, how many broken links are on it, how original the content is, how secure it is (i.e.does it begin with HTTPS and have a padlock icon in the address bar) plus a few others. Have a read of the post if you want to dive into the nitty-gritty of each factor on the list.
